DINNER HONOREES

Michele and Eli Chaikin

Michele and Eli Chaikin
Michele and Eli Chaikin moved to North Woodmere in the fall of 1997. Originally from Belgium, they were searching for a warm and welcoming community to call home and found much more than that. They are grateful  that their two beautiful children, Hannah (20) and Arieh (18), grew up at the Young Israel of North Woodmere surrounded by incredible friends and role models.

Michele has served both on the Young Israel of North Woodmere’s board as well as on the leadership of the sisterhood. She kick started the first YINW directory, published the YINW Cookbook and ran many successful fundraising projects. Community involvement and leadership was instilled in her from a very early age by community active parents.

Eli is a talented graphic designer and the owner of the Pakua School in Hewlett, where he teaches a wide array of Martial Art related disciplines. He has been involved on the YINW board for decades and is responsible for designing our stained glass windows, the Holocaust memorial and many other wonderful projects at the YINW. Eli is our Baal Shacharis for both Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Since 2008 he has dedicated his time to keeping our synagogue safe, working hand in hand with a wonderful team of volunteers.

The Simchat Torah Farbrengen has been a tradition in our neighborhood since 1998. The Chaikins open up their home to the whole community after Hakafot and the event has become an anchor of our Community life.

Michele and Eli feel privileged to be a part of the YINW family and strive to give back as much as they can, in any way they can.

DINNER HONOREES

Mariana and Zev Gorbach

Mariana and Zev Gorbach
Zev Vladimir Gorbach and his wife Mariana Gorbach were both born in what was the former Soviet Union. In 1990, Zev decided to run from the communist country for the promised land, Israel. Mariana followed soon after in 1991. The two met there and had their daughter Daiana in 1994 (25, now married to Avraham Mamenko.) They then decided to move to the US, trying to build the American dream. In 2000 they moved to Brooklyn, New York and had their son Yefim (18) shortly after in 2001. Things went well and while the Russian community of Sheepshead Bay was as lovely as can be, in 2004, they began to search for a Jewish community. Zev and Mariana fell in love with North Woodmere on the spot and were living there just a few months later. Zev had a great year of opening his new business Aqualife, owning a new home in a beautiful Jewish neighborhood, and seemingly living the American dream, but he wanted to have closer ties to the Orthodox Jewish community, something that he never was permitted to have in the USSR. Upon entering the Young Israel of North Woodmere and meeting Rabbi Septimus and everyone else, Zev understood that for once in his life he was surrounded by his own. He quickly began to attend on every Shabbat, something that he never thought would happen in his lifetime. Zev has never been happier and has never felt that he belonged to a community more than this one and he is grateful for all of you sitting here today. Zev and Mariana would like to thank Rabbi Septimus for inviting them to, and making them feel welcome in, this beautiful community.

DINNER HONOREES

Judith and Zvi Gutman

Judith and Zvi Gutman
Zvi and Judith Gutman moved to North Woodmere in December 2010. Originally hailing from Israel via Brooklyn and Montreal, respectively, Zvi and Judy were excited to join a dynamic and growing community. They were immediately drawn to YINW due to the warm embrace of Rabbi & Mrs. Septimus and due to the friendliness of its members. Zvi owns a growing physical therapy home care business and is a partner in Theryon, a mobile app and website which allows users to hire physical therapists on demand. Judy is an attorney and provides property tax reduction services.

Since moving in, Zvi and Judy have welcomed four beautiful children k”h, and they continue to enjoy being a part of the YINW family.
